Puddle Mirage

Summerhot highway
dry straight ahead road
wet shimmer
rippling on distant pavement
shining silver
like sunlit water.
Watch it.
It is instructive.
As you drive toward it
it always breaks and fades
to shine again
just beyond
reach.
It always
tantalizes
the dry thirst
of your prairie eyes.

Hi Coyote: why are you staying up so late writing poetry? Bue don't answer that...I already know why.

It's amazing how easy it is to spot the west in you...and how the picture you've drawn brings back a perfect, westerly childhood memory of my own.

Do you think any one who hasn't been in the middle of a scorched prairie on a simmering day can see the picture?

there are mirages,
everywhere around,
all we have to have
are eyes for them...
