Thanks, Guillermo. Those little birds with the strange circles are most likely red winged blackbirds.... which, in fact, are quite closely related to this guy.
My ID schema is to default to the most common species in the area and delve into the less likelies only if it doesn't match that. Which isn't to say one doesn't sometimes see rare birds... or at least odd ones.

Now I hope you can shoot one of those little birds that are black with some strange red and yellow circles in the wings so I can find out the name!

Isn't this on the immigration test?
I mistook one of these for a Brewer's Blackbird and got all excited that I had seen something rare.
Alas, a more knowledgeable birder set me right.
Yeah, their beaks and tails are a bit different.
